Users can watch PlayStation VR 3D movies using the headset. Those who’ve done it say it’s mind-blowing. Here’s how to get started.
You’re probably thinking, “I had no clue my PSVR could do this.” You can use PSVR’s special cinematic feature to play non-VR PS4 games, watch VR 3D videos, and browse the internet in 2D. The best part about watching VR 3D videos is the upgraded screen size, which is much bigger than a standard TV set. It’s like an IMAX cinema screen, but with the perfect display size and full isolation. By just wearing a VR headset, you can feel like you’re in a cinema.
Setting Up Cinematic Mode
Cinematic is simple to set up, because everything you need to do is plug in the headset and turn on the console. Now, you’ll see the PS4 menu through the visor. Movie quality won’t always be perfect, so you’ll need to make some adjustments.
This mode makes it possible to watch VR movies on three different screen sizes- small, medium, and large (117-inch, 163-inch, and 226-inch respectively).
PSVR Cinematic Mode Screen Size
You can select whichever one you want under Settings. From here, go to devices, then Cinematic Mode in PlayStation VR. The largest size may be tempting, but the image quality is relatively poor (be warned). Ideally, you’d choose the medium size.
You can watch different types of virtual reality content on PSVR, as Sony issued several updates for the Media Player app of the console following the release. Using the console’s software, you can watch VR movies in formats like AVI, MKV, MP4, MPEG2 TS, MPEG2 PS, JPEG, AVCHD, BMP, and PNG files. The headset can also play 3D Blu-Rays since the PlayStation 4.50 update.
Smoother Images on Small and Medium Screens
Thanks to the 120 Hz refresh rate, smoother images are enjoyed on Small and Medium screen sizes. This makes it less likely to get dizzy watching PlayStation VR 3D videos.
Keep in mind it’s not possible to store such content on the PS4 directly, so you’ll need to store it on a local media server or use a USB stick.
Services like Hulu and Vrideo have dedicated apps, letting PSVR users watch curated PSVR movies. There are many such movies worth checking out.
You’re sure to find at least a dozen titles that are a pleasure to watch. Enjoy your PSVR headset and the unique, immersive experience!
